GASOLINE BLAST BURNS ROCKBRIDGE MAN

A Rockbridge County man suffered second-degree burns Tuesday when spilled gasoline exploded in his garage.

Authorities said Rodney Thomas was trying to dilute the gasoline with water when a sump pump turned on, causing a spark.

Thomas, 39, of the Hoppers Creek community of Natural Bridge Station, was flown to Roanoke Memorial Hospital by the Life-Guard 10 helicopter.

He was transferred to the burn center at University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, where he was in stable condition Tuesday evening.
