INCUMBENTS VICTORIOUS IN INDEPENDENCE VOTE

Independence Mayor Charles Austin easily turned back a challenge from French P. "Jack" Blevins in Tuesday's election by a vote of 170 to 52.

Voters also returned all six members of Independence Town Council to the governing body. Herbert Anderson and Frank Dowell were the top council vote-getters, each with 168 votes; Paul Byrd had 157; Gordon Miniclier, 143; Ellis Reeves, 164; and Clair Yoder, 126.

Newcomer Cecil Adams, with 110 votes, failed to unseat any of the incumbents.
