SALEM INCUMBENTS WIN

Voter apathy appears to be on the decline in Salem, where incumbents Carl "Sonny" Tarpley and W. "Mac" Green were re-elected to City Council Tuesday.

Both candidates ran unopposed for the third consecutive time.

However, voter turnout in Salem was up compared with the previous two elections that included Tarpley and Green on the ballot.

This year, 792 or 7.1 percent of Salem's 11,143 registered voters went to the polls.

That's up from 6.5 percent voter turnout in 1986 and 4.5 percent in 1982 - the last two elections in which Tarpley and Green ran unopposed.

"The trend seems to be on the upswing," said Georgia Firebaugh, Salem's voter registrar. "That's good news, always. We like to see people exercise their right to vote."

Tarpley received 714 votes. Green received 648 votes. There were 27 write-in votes.
