HILLSVILLE ELECTS NEW MAYOR, COUNCILMEN

The town of Hillsville got a new mayor in a three-way race Tuesday, along with two new Town Council members.

Mayor Barnard L. Martin drew 213 votes, but challenger James I. Webb wrested the post away from him with 252. The third candidate was Rufus Barton Cooley, who had 190 votes.

In the Pine Creek District, Councilman Robert M. Morison lost to challenger Bernard C. Talley by a 118-61 margin. Another incumbent in the Laurel Fork District, Gene M. Pack, a former Hillsville police chief, lost out to Strader E. Blankenship, 121 to 93.

The Piper's Gap District had another three-way race, but incumbent Mary L. Horton drew 60 votes to win. Her opponents were Jeanne Caudill Webb, who got 32 votes; Orba Owen Alderman, 35; and Herman Robinson, 6.

In the Sulphur Springs District, Councilman Jack W. Akers was unopposed. He got 103 votes.
