Paitsel received 70 votes for the top post. Though his name wasn't on the ballot, he had been quoted in local newspapers as saying he would serve if elected "as my time and energy permits."
Paitsel's 70 mayoral votes topped seven for A.J. Simmons Jr., four for James Shires and two for Otis Payne, all write-ins.
Also, Town Council candidates Richard Unroe and Dan Showalter were elected to two of Iron Gate's three available council seats, with Unroe receiving 58 votes and Showalter 53, said Charles Walker, secretary of the Alleghany County Electoral Board.
A.J. Simmons Jr. appeared to be the highest vote-getter among a long list of write-in candidates for the third council seat with 37 votes, Walker said. James Shires was a close second with 36 votes.
Walker said the tally must be confirmed by the Electoral Board, at which time the highest vote-getter will be asked if he wishes to accept the council seat.
