CONFERENCE BOSS SAYS HE MAY RETIRE NEXT YEAR

Southern Conference Commissioner Dave Hart, who is in the final year of a five-year contract, said Tuesday he is leaning toward retiring next year.

Hart, who turns 65 on Saturday, said he may announce he will retire during the conference meetings May 20-25 in Myrtle Beach if "I can bring myself by that time to say that I'm definitely going to do it."

Hart joined the conference July 1, 1986, becoming the fourth commissioner in the league's history.

The Southern Conference, considered one of the top I-AA football leagues in the nation, consists of Appalachian State, The Citadel, East Tennessee State, Furman, Marshall, Tennessee-Chattanooga, VMI and Western Carolina. - Associated Press
