BUENA VISTA PLANT FOE LOSES COUNCIL SEAT BID

A woman who took a stand against the proposed cogeneration plant in her bid for a City Council seat was not elected Tuesday, according to unofficial election returns.

Kathleen Dickenson, who said attracting other industries to Buena Vista might make up for the loss of expected tax revenues from the cogeneration plant - which is under fire for environmental reasons - received the fewest votes of any of the five council candidates.

Since there were four seats open, the remaining candidates, James Michael "Mike" Clements, Deborah Garrett, W.L. "Billy" Gibson and W.D. "Tarheel" Ward - the only incumbent - all were elected, election officials said.

Dickenson received 531 votes; Clements, 813 votes; Garrett, 850 votes; and Gibson, 675 votes, according to Tuesday night's unofficial tally.
