USAIR PLANE EVACUATED IN LYNCHBURG

A USAir flight preparing to take off for Baltimore was evacuated Tuesday at Lynchburg Municipal Airport when smoke was noticed in the passenger compartment, officials said.

Flight 4055 was taxiing from the boarding ramp to the runway about 11:15 a.m. when the smoke was detected in the Jetstream 31 propeller aircraft. The plane was evacuated, said USAir customer service manager Donald E. Martin.

Martin said the smoke was coming from the engine, but there was no evidence of a fire. He said the cause of the malfunction had not been determined.
