PLANNERS OPPOSE REQUEST FOR CREATING BED AND BREAKFAST

The Bedford County Planning Commission Tuesday recommended denial of a plan to turn a Smith Mountain Lake home into a bed and breakfast.

The commissioners voted 4-2 against the proposal, which had rated well under Bedford County's zoning point system, but did not score well with the neighbors.

Robert Earles' neighbors in Moneta said a bed and breakfast would destroy the residential character of the neighborhood and turn Earles' Mockingbird Hill home into nothing more than a rooming house for fishermen.

A final decision is up to the Board of Supervisors, which could act on the matter as early as Monday.

If rejected, Earles' proposal would be only the second project turned down since Bedford County's Land Use Guidance System went into effect in October.
