N.Y. AIDS RATE REPORT NOT TRUE, OFFICIALS SAY

News reports suggesting one in four younger men in New York is AIDS-infected are incorrect, the Centers for Disease Control said Wednesday.

The publication Medical Tribune sparked a flurry of news stories with a report this week that "in the New York City-New Jersey region, one in four men aged 25-44 is seropositive for AIDS." Other news reports said the figure applied to males 25-44 in New York City itself.

Dr. James Curran, director of the CDC's Division of HIV and AIDS, said the news reports were triggered when a CDC AIDS researcher told a medical conference in Baltimore that a single hospital in the New York-New Jersey area had reported a 24 percent infection rate among men 25-44.
