GM SEEKS TO INCREASE EXECUTIVES' PENSIONS

In a move aggravating its strained relations with the United Automobile Workers, General Motors Corp. is trying to increase sharply the pensions of its retiring chairman, Roger B. Smith, and 3,350 top white-collar executives. The plan would raise Smith's annual payout from $700,000 to about $1.25 million.

GM is seeking shareholder approval at its annual meeting on May 25 for the proposal, which is intended to make GM pensions more competitive with other U.S. corporations, a spokesman said. - The New York Times
