BUCS RALLY, OVERTAKE WINSTON-SALEM 10-6

Five hours is a long time to wait for anything. But for a Salem Buccaneers team looking for a spark, a little extra time was only a minor inconvenience.

The Bucs had to wait out a rain delay of 1 hour, 25 minutes, but rallied for five runs in the seventh inning to post a 10-6 Carolina League victory over the Winston-Salem Spirits on Wednesday night at Municipal Field.

Catcher Mandy Romero opened the seventh with a double off Spirits starter Jim Bullinger. Then, Chris Estep reached on an infield single off Bullinger's right leg, allowing Romero to advance to third.

Steve DiBartolomeo relieved Bullinger, but had to wait through the rain delay before facing Ben Shelton.

Shelton hit a chopper into the hole on the left side of the infield. Shortstop Billy White fielded the ball, but had no play as Romero scored the tying run.

Darwin Pennye, who entered the game with .108 batting average, then broke out of a slump by doubling to left, scoring Estep with the go-ahead run. Shortstop Mike Huyler provided insurance by hitting his first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left that made it 10-6.

That was all for DiBartolomeo, who didn't retire a batter.

Tim McDowell, who came on in relief of ineffective starter Steve Buckholz, picked up the victory, his first of the season. Mike Pomeranz didn't qualify for the save but closed by striking out four of the seven batters he faced in the last two innings.

Butch Schlopy (1-2) pitches tonight as the Bucs travel to Prince William.
