BANK-WINDOW CREATOR EDWARD BLAINE JR. DIES

Edward L. Blaine Jr., credited with creating the drive-up banking window in the late 1930s, died Monday after a long illness at age 89.

Blaine went to work for Seattle's National City Bank in 1924 and became vice president of Seattle's People's Bank in 1935. About two years later he decided to cut a window at the First Avenue branch for drive-up customers.
