MOUNTAINEERS BLANK SALEM

The Blue Ridge District baseball race will come down to a final game Friday when Lord Botetourt visits Alleghany in a meeting of the league's top two teams.

Alleghany had a chance to clinch its fourth consecutive crown Wednesday by winning at Salem. The Mountaineers (6-2-1 in the district, 8-4-1 overall) did their part with a 6-0 victory as Brian Carson held the Spartans to three singles.

Lord Botetourt (6-3 in the district) stayed in contention by beating William Byrd 10-6 to extend the race to the last day.

"I just kept the ball down," Carson said of his success. The last time he faced Salem, he almost didn't get out of the first inning as the Spartans (4-5, 7-9) hit a pair of doubles and a homer at Alleghany. But the Mountaineers won the game.

"The people we beat beat everybody else," said John Hinkle, Salem's coach. "I mean we beat people that beat Botetourt and Alleghany, but we can't beat those two teams."

Carson drove in all the runs he needed in the first inning when he flied to center, scoring Brian Porterfield. The Mountaineers scored two runs in the third when David Groseclose's single scored Porterfield, who led off with a double. Groseclose scored later in the inning on a wild pitch.

Carson was in control all the way. He allowed only an infield hit in the last five innings and retired 14 of the final 15 Salem hitters.
