RADFORD MAN CHARGED WITH STORE BREAK-IN

Police arrested a man Tuesday and charged him with breaking into a military surplus store that morning and stealing hundreds of dollars of merchandise.

Paul D. Carper Jr., 19, of the 1300 block of First Street, was being held Wednesday in Radford City Jail on $12,000 bond pending a preliminary hearing, which had not been scheduled. He was charged with breaking and entering and grand larceny.

Radford Lt. Jackie Roop said the owner of Elliott's Military Surplus, in the 1400 block of First Street, reported Tuesday morning that someone had broken a glass in the front door during the night, entered the store and taken fishing supplies and Army clothes and merchandise. Carper was arrested Tuesday afternoon and most of the merchandise was recovered from his apartment, Roop said.
