The 10th annual Strawberry Festival, sponsored by Community School, will be held Friday and Saturday at Crestar Plaza, near the Roanoke City Market.
Strawberry shortcakes and sundaes, fresh-squeezed lemonade and limeade and strawberry slushes will be sold from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. both days. Prices range from $2.50 to $3.50, with proceeds to benefit the school.
Advance tickets may be purchased at Heironimus downtown; Tangles, in the City Market building; the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-op; Imagination Station; Community School; and the Pet Place in Daleville. Tickets also will be available at the festival, which coincides with the Roanoke Chili Cook-Off on the market. Three days of events scheduled for youths
A teen dance, youth forum and Student Government Day will be featured events for the second annual Youth Weekend Saturday through Monday. The event is sponsored by the Roanoke Office on Youth, Youth Services Citizen Board, Youth Advisory Committee and Parks and Recreation Department.
The dance, for Roanoke middle- and high-school students, will be held Saturday from 8 p.m. until midnight at the National Guard Armory, 32 Reserve Ave. S.W. A disc jockey will provide the music. Ticket information is available from the schools.
Sunday's youth forum will be held from 6 until 9 p.m. at the Armory. The forum is an opportunity for young people and their families to hear speakers on various topics and to speak on the topics themselves. This year's topic is education, with the theme "We (youth) are tomorrow's shining stars . . . Stay in school." Special recognition will be given to the middle or high school with the greatest number of parents and students attending.
Monday will be Students Government Day. Students will attend a meeting of the Roanoke City Council and have lunch with state and local officials. Pupils from Fishburn Elementary School will be special guests.

Pupils from seven Roanoke-area elementary schools participated in a poster contest held in observance of Community Law Week. The theme of the contest, which was sponsored by the Virginia Women Attorney's Association, is "Generations of Justice."
Bent Mountain Elementary School received $50 for having the highest percentage - 100 percent - of its pupils participating in the contest. The prize money will be used by the school's library to purchase books about law.
Other schools participating in the contest were South Salem, Garden City, Clearbrook, Green Valley, Roland E. Cook and Hardy Road elementary schools. The posters are on display through Sunday at Valley View Mall. Deadline extended for Magnet Schools
The application deadline for Roanoke's Magnet Schools has been extended through May 11.
Magnet Schools draw students from throughout the Roanoke Valley to schools where particular themes are emphasized. Among programs available to students are computer science, aviation, visual and performing arts and communications.
There is no tuition charge and students outside the city of Roanoke may attend. Transportation is provided for students within the city.

The Easter Seal Society of Virginia is sponsoring a community awareness campaign as part of its observance of May as Better Hearing and Speech Month.
Easter Seals will provide free hearing screenings on Thursdays during May from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. at its office at 4841 Williamson Road N.W. No appointment is necessary for the screenings, which last about five minutes.
Preschool speech/language screenings are available for children ages 2-6. The 20-minute screenings are done by appointment only. Interested parents may call 362-1656 for an appointment.i
Business college gets additional accreditation
National Business College has received accreditation from the American Association of Medical Assistants.
The junior college offers an associate degree in medical assisting. With accreditation, students will be eligible to take the certification examination immediately upon graduation. Previously, the students had to work full time for a year after graduating before they were allowed to take the exam. Inner City coach wins public-service award
Joe Gaither of Roanoke has received a Jefferson Award from the American Institute for Public Service.
Gaither has been a coach for the Inner City Athletic Association for 11 years. The award recognized him for serving as a role model as well as a coach for his players, many of whom have gone on to successful athletic careers in high school and college.
Nominations for the award were solicited by WSET-TV, the area sponsor for the Jefferson Awards. More than 120 nominations were received and five were selected by a panel of judges to receive the award, a bronze medallion. Woman's Club chapter wins 11 district awards
The Woman's Club of Roanoke has won 11 awards for accomplishments during the 1989-90 club year. The awards were presented during the recent meeting of the Blue Ridge District.
The club won five first-place awards, four second-place awards and two special-emphasis awards.
Four club members - Francis Corbin, Sarah Hendley, Opal Meador and Leona Tremper - won individual blue ribbons in the arts and crafts show. Their entries were submitted for judging at the state level. Youth weight-control camp set July 16-20
The Virginia Cooperative Extension Service will sponsor a youth weight-control camp July 16-20 at the Smith Mountain Lake 4-H Center.
"Camp Lighten Up" will feature a youth-oriented program to develop weight-control management, self-esteem and behavior management.

The Junior League of Roanoke Valley has announced eight recipients of its Community Opportunity Grants.
A total of $3,500 will be shared by the following organizations: City Rescue Mission, $500; Voluntary Action Center of the Council of Community Services, $500; city of Roanoke, Adventures for Kids, $500; Mental Health Association, $500; Association for Retarded Citizens, $400; the Achievement Center, $360; Apple Ridge Farm Inc., $413; and the League of Older Americans, $327.
The grants were established to fund volunteer programs fulfilling specific community needs. The Junior League awards these grants of up to $500 twice each year. The next deadline for applications is Oct. 1. Businesswomen name woman of the year
Sandra L. Duggins has been elected woman of the year by the Southwest Centennial chapter of the American Business Women's Association.
Duggins is a senior account administrator in the employee benefits department of Dominion Trust Co. She has served as chairwoman of several chapter committees and was treasurer in 1988.
