DEMONS WIN NEW RIVER TITLE

Demond Wesley of Christiansburg and Anne Fontaine of George Wythe each won five events, but Wesley's Blue Demons won the New River District meet and Fontaine's Maroons did not.

Wesley won the long jump, triple jump, 100, 200 and 400 as Christiansburg dominated the meet at George Wythe.

Fontaine was similarly sensational, winning the long jump, triple jump, high jump, 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles. Blacksburg nevertheless exploited its depth to edge Wythe 122-105.

In other track meets:

Brod Bonds of William Byrd won three events and Alleghany edged Salem 114-113 in the team competition at the boy's Blue Ridge District track meet Thursday at Salem Stadium.

In the girls' meet, Salem's Rhonda Chattin and Leah Johnson were each double winners as the Spartans overpowered the rest of the field by 112 points.

Bonds won the long jump, 100 and 200. Meanwhile, Brian Burke's 6-foot, 7-inch high jump broke by 1/2-inch a meet record that stood for five years and Paul Jordan's 40.1 run through the 300-meters eclipsed by two-tenths of a second a standard that had been on the books 11 years.

Vicki Irving of Northside, who won the long jump and triple jump, set a meet record with a 34-10 3/4 triple jump.

Laurel Park's Floyd Dillard won three events, but Bassett edged Martinsville to win the team title in the Piedmont District meet at Laurel Park.

Laurel Park's Terry Lynch won two events as the Lancers ran away with the Piedmont District title on their home track.

\ BASEBALL: At Rocky Gap, Robbie Pauley (1-8) pitched a one-hitter as Rocky Gap closed its season with a 10-0 victory over Bland in a Mountain Empire District game shortened to five innings because of the 10-run rule.

At Collinsville, Scott Hubbard pitched a two-hitter as Chatham clinched the Piedmont District title with a 12-0 victory over Fieldale-Collinsville.

At Rocky Mount, Tommy Sheppard's two-run homer and Pulaski County won 8-3 for a split of a double-header with Franklin County.

At Shawsville, Robert Ryan hit a two-run homer and was the winning pitcher in relief as the host Shawnees defeated Auburn 15-9 in the Mountain Empire District.

\ SOFTBALL: At Dalevile, host Lord Botetourt defeated Alleghany 10-1 and clinched at least a tie for first in the final regular-season standings in the Blue Ridge District. Katrina Wilhelm and April Wiltshire each drove in two runs to lead the Cavaliers (8-2, 12-3). Alleghany is 3-7 in the district.

Parry McCluer's Jenny Williams blanked Craig County 6-0 in a Pioneer District game at Buena Vista.

Brandy Hensley hit a two-run triple to spark James River to an 11-6 victory over Rockbridge in the Pioneer District.

Back-to-back five-inning no-hitters were tossed at William Fleming, one of them by the Colonels' Penny Smith, but Heritage still salvaged a sweep, 8-0 in the first game and 6-5 in the nightcap. Smith was victimized by six errors; the Colonels (1-12) had 11 in the doubleheader.

\ BOYS' TENNIS: Cave Spring (11-1) clinched the regular-season title in the Roanoke Valley District with a 5-4 victory against Patrick Henry. District tournament play at River's Edge in Roanoke begins Monday with individual competition and wraps up Tuesday with team matches.

At Radford's Dedmon Center, Blacksburg repeated as the New River District boys' champion with an 8-1 victory against Radford. David Holton of Blacksburg defeated John David Semones of Radford for the individual singles crown, and Noah Spaulding and Sean Phillips of Radford won the doubles crown against Yong Oh and James Langebeck of Blacksburg.
