VIRGINIA'S EXPORTS A RECORD $8 BILLION

Virginia exported a record $8 billion worth of goods during 1989, with tobacco and coal amounting to just under half of that, the state Department of World Trade has reported. That was an 11.4 percent increase over the $7.2 billion in goods exported a year earlier.

Tobacco exports were valued at $1.77 billion and coal at $1.75 billion. Machinery exports, more than $1 billion, climbed slightly after a sharp increase in 1987.

The highest growth was to East Asia, where sales jumped 18 percent to $1.5 billion, representing a fifth of the total exports. - Staff report
