Summerlin is returning to his native state for college. He was born in Chapel Hill while his father, Daniel, an anesthesiologist, was attending UNC's medical school.
Summerlin, 17, chose the Tar Heels over Virginia, Florida and Penn State. The Roanoke County resident ranks in the top 16 nationally in the 200 and 400 IM in his age group. His state 400 IM record is 3 minutes, 59.81 seconds.
A member of the National Honor Society, Summerlin swam this season for North Cross' first-year team. He developed his talents swimming for the Roanoke Valley Aquatic Association Gators and Hidden Valley Country Club. - Staff report
