$16,000 GIVEN TO W&L FUND FOR REPORTER

The Tampa Tribune and its parent company, Media General Inc. of Richmond, have contributed $16,000 to a memorial fund at Washington and Lee University for a slain reporter for the newspaper.

The Todd C. Smith Memorial Fellowship Fund had raised more than $53,500 of its $100,000 goal from 392 donors as of the end of April, the school said Thursday.

Smith, who worked for the Tampa newspaper, was killed in Peru last November while investigating drug trafficking. He was a 1983 W&L graduate.

The fellowship will be used to help Washington and Lee journalism students who want to become foreign correspondents. It will provide a stipend for travel and study in a country of choice. It is open to juniors and seniors.
