PRINCE WILLIAM ROUTS BUCS 12-2

Every Prince William player scored at least once Thursday night as the Cannons routed the Salem Buccaneers 12-2 to open a three-game Carolina League baseball series.

All but two Cannons had a hit and all but one drove in a run as Prince William reached season highs for runs (12) and hits (17).

The Cannons (8-14) did maintain some respect for at least one of the Bucs' hitters, who had outscored them 34-10 in the sweeping a four-game, season-opening series last month at Salem. Bucs center fielder Greg Sims reached on four walks and a fielder's choice in five plate appearances Thursday.

The winning pitcher was Cullen Hartzog (2-2), who was ahead in the count on only one Buc but gave up just three hits and one run, walked five and struck out five.

The Bucs (10-12) led 1-0 in the first inning after Sims walked, advanced on a balk and scored on a single to left by Bruce Schreiber.

Salem, which had five hits, didn't score again until the ninth inning. Down 12-1, Mike Huyler doubled to right off Rich Polak, who earned his first save, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Schreiber's groundout.

Butch Schlopy (2-2) was the losing pitcher.
