RADIOACTIVE MATERIAL NO LONGER `MISSING'

A crate containing a potentially lethal radioactive material that has been missing from Georgetown University Hospital since April 20 apparently was picked up by a courier from the material's manufacturer, hospital officials have announced.

The announcement appeared to end several days of concern at the hospital, which discovered on Monday that the 115-pound crate containing a small piece of iridium 192 was missing.

Carol Fox King, assistant director of medical public relations at Georgetown, said the hospital had not officially confirmed whether the radioactive material, used to treat cancers of the lung and cervix, is on the way to its manufacturer in the Netherlands.

But, she added, "we're almost totally positive that it's on its way back. We're breathing a sigh of relief." - The Washington Post
