RETIRED MINER SLAIN, ROBBED IN TAZEWELL

Tazewell County authorities Thursday night were investigating the apparent robbery and killing of an elderly disabled coal miner, Sheriff W.E. Osborne said.

Opie P. Meadows, 76, of the Angles Hollow community near Springville was found shot in the chest between 1 and 2 p.m. by his daughter, Mildred, who works as a dispatcher at the Sheriff's Department.

Meadows was lying on his side just inside the back door of his house. His tobacco pouch was lying outside the house in the yard and his lunch was still on the table.

Osborne said Meadows' wallet was missing and a gun had possibly been taken from the house.

His red Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck with a red camper shell also had been stolen.

"Some neighbors saw the truck going out, but didn't pay much attention," Osborne said.

The truck, which has a gray stripe around its side, had Virginia license number SNA-986.

Police in surrounding counties were asked to be on the lookout for the truck.

A state police helicopter and a private airplane belonging to a police officer were used in the search, according to Osborne.

Sheriff's deputies from McDowell and Mercer counties in West Virginia also joined in the search, Osborne said.
