HENRICO OFFICER BELIEVED TO HAVE KILLED HERSELF

An off-duty Henrico County policewoman who had been the object of a large-scale search was found dead today in a county park, the apparent victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.

The body of the officer was found by police about 6:40 a.m. in a wooded area in the western section of the county. A gun was found near the body of the 24-year-old officer, who was dressed in street clothes, sources told The Richmond News Leader.

"It appears to be a suicide," a high-ranking officer told the newspaper.

The officer, whose name was withheld until her parents could be notified, had graduated from the Henrico Police Training Academy in April 1989.

Henrico Police Chief Richard G. Engels said the officer was scheduled to have reported for duty at midnight.

A police spokesman, Lt. Lewis E. Shaw, said authorities became concerned about the officer when she did not report for her patrol shift.
