MEETING TO EXAMINE RIVER DEVELOPMENT

Concerned about the environmental impact of increasing development along the Roanoke River? Want more access to the river?

A public meeting to discuss the Roanoke River Corridor Draft Study will be held Monday at Shawsville High School on Virginia 753 in Shawsville.

Among the issues addressed in the study are problems with soil erosion, lack of access to the river, flooding, groundwater and surface water quality, encroachment upon habitats, preservation of historical structures and rural character, and the protection of agricultural and forestry uses.

The meeting will include a slide presentation, a display of detailed maps of the land uses along the river, and a question and answer period.

The draft study was prepared by an ad hoc group planners and citizens' groups from the localities along the river, from Montgomery County to Bedford County, to study the river and make recommendations for development and preservation policies

The public is encouraged to attend the meeting. A second meeting wil be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Hardy Road School at 1200 Hardy Road in Vinton.

Call Randi Lemmon, regional planner with the New River Valley Planning District Commission at 639-9313 for more information.
