NORTH CROSS BATTLES PATRICK HENRY TO TIE

Ten seconds isn't a lot of time. But for Patrick Henry's soccer team, it was a little too much and for North Cross', it was just enough.

North Cross fullback Scott Austin deflected a throw-in from Dustin Fonder into the goal in the closing seconds of regulation to tie the score. Then neither team scored in two overtimes as Patrick Henry and North Cross finished in a 1-1 tie Friday at River's Edge Sports Complex.

"That 10 seconds seemed like an eternity," said Michael Eddy, PH's senior forward. "It's such a letdown because we had them beat. The last 10 seconds we weren't as intense, and they capitalized on us."

Patrick Henry (8-1-2) appeared poised to avenge its 1-0 loss last week at North Cross after Todd Creasy finished off a perfect cross from Eddy to put the Patriots up by a goal with about seven minutes left in regulation.

However, North Cross (13-1-1) wasn't about to concede the battle for soccer supremacy of the Roanoke Valley.

After watching Patrick Henry control play for most of the second half, the Raiders broke out of their defensive posture and made one last offensive rush.

Patriots sweeper Brian McClung made the right play when he cleared a North Cross ball out of the attack zone and over the sideline. Yet, it ended up being the break the Raiders' needed.

From the right side, Fonder sent a high throw into the PH penalty area. Patriots goalie Geoff Gilmore came off his line to try to snare the ball, but it went over his head.

The ball skipped across the goalmouth to Austin, who was positioned by the far post. Austin made a quick touch to control the ball, then tapped it into the net at the 79:50 mark to make it 1-1.

"A goal at anytime is still a goal," said Ed McMichael, the Patriots' coach, "but with 10 seconds left . . . your emotions go from high to very low in a matter of seconds."

In other boys' soccer:
