KEYDETS' KOVAC WINS HAMMER-THROW TITLE

VMI's Kenny Kovac, who was the Southern Conference champion in the hammer throw last week, won the event Friday in the 16th annual Gatorade Track Classic.

Kovac threw 177 feet, 5 inches, more than 3 feet farther than he threw at the conference meet.

Former Olympic marathoner Margaret Groos, who ran at the University of Virginia, battled Tennessee All-American Patty Wiegand lap for lap before bursting ahead at the finish line to win the 5,000-meter run. - Associated Press
