CRAPPIE SCORE BIG IN OPTIMIST

Crappie fishermen were the big scorers early in the Optimist Club of Cave Spring fishing tournament, which opened Friday at Smith Mountain Lake.

The leading crappie was a 1.75-pound catch by Thomas Holmes of Roanoke. Holmes reported catching his fish on a jig in the upper end of Gill Creek, not far from tournament headquarters at Foxsport Marine Camp.

Tied for second place in the crappie category were Roanokers Jeff Baker and Jerry Martin. Each entered a 1.60-pound fish.

The heaviest catch in the early going was a 7.60-pound catfish, landed on a nightcrawler by M.R. Robertson of Rocky Mount.

Leading the largemouth category was Steve Dalton Sr. of Hurt with a 5.30-pound fish. Bill Bumgarner of Richlands had the top smallmouth, a 3.14-pound Gills Creek catch.

The muskie and walleye category remained open through Friday afternoon. The tournament continues until noon Sunday.
