RAINY VICTORY ESCAPES BUCS

The Salem Buccaneers took advantage of a wet field to rally from a three-run deficit, but let the game slip away after a rain delay and dropped a 6-4 decision to the Prince William Cannons on Friday night in Carolina League baseball.

Prince William starter Ed Martel was leading 3-0 and working on a one-hitter in the sixth inning when the Bucs rallied in the rain.

Flavio Williams, Greg Sims and Bruce Schreiber loaded the bases with consecutive infield singles. Catcher Orlando Romero then blooped a single to right-center field, scoring Williams and Sims. Domingo Merejo then made it five consecutive hits with a two-run double into the left-field corner.

With more rain falling in the bottom of the inning, the Cannons tied it at 4 on singles by Dave Howell, Russ Davis and Keke Hernandez. After Hernandez's RBI single, the umpires stopped the game for 1 hour, 20 minutes as the rain increased.

With Tim McDowell (1-1) on in relief of starter Tim Wakefield after the delay, Prince William scored two runs with a two-out rally in the seventh. J.T. Snow walked and Sherman Obando doubled him home to make it 5-4. Howell then singled to left to make it 6-4.

Salem never threatened again as Mike Gardella (seventh save) closed out the victory for Bruce Prybylinski (1-2).
