MARION INDIVIDUALS STAR

Marions boy's team finished only fourth in the Highlands District track and field meet Friday in Abingdon, but the Scarlet Hurricane had more than its share of first-place finishes with five in 12 events.

Marion scored 79 points and 50 came as Steve Poston finished first in the long jump (20 feet, 3 inches), Preston Scott won the 1,600-meter run (4:45.2), Tony Wagner was tops in the 400 meters (53.1), Jason Tate Conquered the field in the 3,200-meter run (10:49.3) and the 1,600-meter relay of Scotty and Steve Poston, Claude Gable and Wagner won in the time of 3:38.9.

John Battle scored 92 points to beat Virginia High (85) for the boys' championship, and Abingdon outscored John Battle 158-105 to capture the girl's title.

The only double winner in the boys was Virginia's Orlando Wheeler, who won the 100-meter dash (11.2) and the 200-meter dash (22.6). Samantha Slade of Abingdon was tops in the girls as she won the long jump (16-1/2), triple jump (33-7 1/2), 100-meter dash (12.9), 400-meter run (1:01.8) and the 200-meter dash (27.0).

John Battle's Melissa Bowden, the Group AA cross country champion and runner-up in both the 800-meter and 1,600-meter in last spring's state meet, won the 1,600 (5:24.1) and 800 (2:26.1).

Marion's girls finished fifth with 33 points as Kathy Stoots, who finished secone in the 3,200-meter fun with a 12:43.7, was the Hurricane's top performer.

BASEBALL: At Lexington, Mike Friski was 3-for-4 at the plate with five runs batted in to lead Lexington past Parry McClure 8-5 in a Pioneer District contest. Brian Shotwell fanned nine while pitching a five hitter for the Scarlet Hurricane (5-10). The Fighting Blues fell to 9-5.

At Low Moor, Troy Cox slugged a grand slam in the seventh inning to lead Lord Botetourt past Alleghany 12-9 for the regular season championship of the Blue Ridge District.

At Blacksburg, Christiansburg scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull out a 5-3 victory against Blacksburg in a New River District game moved from Christiansburg because its field wasn't playable.

With the score 3-3 and the bases loaded, Donnie Robinson hit a grounder to third. The Indians got the force at the plate, but their catcher threw wildly to second trying for the double play and the ball went into the outfield. Two runs scored on the play. Johnny Self had a two-run single in the decisive inning.

At Hillsville, Carroll County and Radford combined for 11 errors, but the Cavaliers had 14 hits enroute to an 11-10 victory against the Bobcats.

Kevin Lindsey was 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI for Carroll County (3-5). James Phillips (2-2) pitched three hitless innings in relirf to earn the victory. Radford is 1-8.

At Bedford, Mike Norton and Keith Coles each went 2-for-3 to lead Liberty (11-5) to a 6-4 victory against winless William Campbell (0-15).

At Forest, Altivista (4-12) scored three times in the top of the seventh on two hits, a walk and an error, to break a 2-2 tie and defeat Jefferson Forest 5-2. Forest is 6-9-1.

BOY'S SOCCER: At Moneta, Mark Andrews and Matt Brown each had two goals and two assists as William Byrd routed Staunton River 11-0, clinching the Blue Ridge District regular-season title. Byrd is 9-0 in the district, 11-1 overall.

At Forest, Ryan Beaster and Dale Green scored goals as Jefferson Forest (5-4) shut out Liberty (1-5-2) to clinch second place in the Seminole District regular season.

SOFTBALL: At Patrick Henry, Cathy King gave up no hits after the second inning and retired the last 13 batters as the Patriots trounced William Fleming 10-2 in the Roanoke Valley District. PH is 6-7; Fleming 1-12.

At Salem, Tracy Palmer pitched a four-hitter and Kelly Robinson hit an inside-the-park grand slam in Salem's 18-3 rout of Northside in a Blue Ridge District contest.
