Levin, 45, will assume the job June 18. He will be responsible for supervising the business reporting staff and the daily business report.
He succeeds Elizabeth Obenshain, who is now editor of the New River Valley editions of the Roanoke Times & World-News.
Levin has worked for the Norfolk newspaper since 1969. He has been assistant city editor for Virginia Beach and as a reporter covered real estate, general business, education, consumer issues and municipal government.
A native of Norfolk, he and his wife, Mary Jean, have one daughter, Alexandra. He holds a bachelor's degree in history from the University of Virginia and a master's in journalism from the University of Missouri.
"John is an experienced, sophisticated business journalist and we're delighted that he'll be joining us," said Jane See White, city editor of the Roanoke Times & World-News. "Under his leadership, our readers can expect added depth and immediacy in our business reporting."
Both the Virginian Pilot and Ledger-Star and the Roanoke Times & World-News are owned by Landmark Communications Inc., based in Norfolk.
