SERGEANT LEADS HOKIE CONTINGENT

Virginia Tech track and field athletes put on some winning performances in the Marshall Twilight Invitational on Saturday.

Mike Sergeant led the way with a first-place finish in the hammer throw. Sergeant's heave of 156 feet was 27 feet better than his closest competitor. Tech's Dave Gutschow was third.

Sergeant also placed second in the discus and shot put.

Garrett Thompson won the high jump with a leap of 6-6. Travis Walter, David Smith and Tim Covington took the top three places in the 5,000-meter run. Walter finished in 14 minutes, 43.4 seconds.

In the women's competition, three Hokies had strong finishes.

Heidi Allen took the 3,000-meter run in 10:17.13, with Robyn Land finishing third. Allen and Land also placed second and third, respectively, in the 1,500-meter race. Kimmie Alcorn was second in the 100 meters.
