Tuttle and Smith had no bogeys and six birdies, including three in a row at Nos. 15-17, to take a two-shot lead against the teams of Rick Ives and Bill Profitt of Hidden Valley and J.W. Entsminger and David Brogan of Lexington Country Club.
There were three teams at 68 and eight at 69, including defending champions Frank Driver and Emmett Clougherty. Also at 69 are Dicky Linkous and John Newton from Hunting Hills in Roanoke.
Two-time Virginia golfer of the year David Partridge and partner Gill FitzHugh were at 71.
The tournament is being played under a format in which both players play their own ball and take the lower score. Tuttle, participating in the event for the first time with any partner, said neither he nor Smith made any putts longer than 20 feet. Swirling winds made for difficult playing conditions.
"We were both around par," Tuttle said. "I can only think of two holes where we were concerned about making par, but we ended up making 4- or 5-footers. Mike's a real horse."
