REPORTER HONORED FOR WSLS WORK

Long-time broadcaster J. William Poole was honored Saturday for his contributions to broadcast news and outstanding service in the public interest.

Poole, who has served as general manager of Fredericksburg radio station WFLS since its inception in 1960, received the Robert Gallimore Distinguished Service Award at the annual meeting and news seminar of the Virginia Associated Press Broadcasters.

The award, named for the former chief of the Virginia bureau of the Associated Press between 1967 and 1985, is given to the candidate who exemplifies a commitment to broadcast journalism and reflects credit and honor on the news profession.

Among individuals, Duane Pohlman received a superior award for Outstanding Effort by an Individual Reporter in television. He was recognized for his work as a general assignment reporter at Roanoke television station WSLS. Pohlman left last month for a job at television station WRAL in Raleigh, N.C.

Frank H. Fuller Certificates for Outstanding News Protection of the Associated Press went to WSET-TV; WTAR-WLTY; WROV, Roanoke; WQRA; WINC, and WKDW-WSGM.
