GLENVAR'S TITLE STRING ENDS AT SIX

Jenny Williams scattered seven hits, got her team's only hit and scored the decisive run as Parry McCluer clinched its first Pioneer District softball title with a 3-2 win against Glenvar on Monday.

The Fighting Blues (10-1 in district, 13-2 overall) ended Glenvar's string of six straight district championships. It was also the Highlanders' (8-2, 11-4) first home lost to a district team in eight years.

At Patrick Henry, Shelley Bowles (10-0) added to her long list of impressive pitching performances as Franklin County downed Patrick Henry 7-0 in Roanoke Valley District action. Bowles (10-0) struck out six and allowed just two hits. At the plate, she was 3-for-3 with two RBI as Franklin County improved to 12-1. PH is 6-8.

Jackie Baker was 2-for-5 with three runs batted in and Heather Hoback was 3-for-5 with two RBI as host Cave Spring pummeled William Fleming 14-5 in Roanoke Valley District action.

\ BASEBALL: Sophomore pitcher Scott Phillips struck out 14 while walking just one to lead Shawsville to a 6-0 victory against host North Cross.

At New Castle, Mike Jones pitched both games of a Pioneer District doubleheader and picked up two wins as Craig County beat James River 7-3 in the first game and 16-1 in the second.

\ BOYS' SOCCER: Rick D'Arte was credited with a goal off a throw-in in the second overtime as Salem handed host William Byrd its first Blue Ridge District loss of the season, 1-0.

Both William Byrd (9-1 in Blue Ridge, 11-2) and Salem (7-2-1, 7-3-1) get byes for the first round of the Blue Ridge District Tournament. The top-seeded Terriers will play the winner of Staunton River and Lord Botetourt. Salem faces the winner of Alleghany and Northside.

At Patrick Henry, Lang Wedemeyer and Michael Eddy scored two goals each to lead the Patriots past Franklin County 5-1 and assure PH (9-1-2) of the Roanoke Valley District title.

Steward Baucom scored two goals, including the winner in the second overtime as North Cross (14-1-1) beat host Roanoke Catholic 3-2. Catholic is 7-3-1.

\ GIRLS' SOCCER: At Ridgeway, Kristen Gacek had three saves in the first half, then came out of the goal to score three times in the second half as North Cross (2-7) shut out Magna Vista 8-0.

\ TENNIS: Salem defeated William Byrd 8-1 and Northside dropped Lord Botetourt 5-4 in the Blue Ridge District team semifinals at the Salem Civic Center. Salem will meet Northside this morning for the team championship. Salem's Tommy McDonald defeated Antonette Veloso of William Byrd 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. The individual semifinals begin today.

Cave Spring's Scott Hawes defeated Del Turner of Patrick Henry 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to win the singles competition in the Roanoke Valley District tournament at William Fleming High School. Turner teamed with Maurice Masinter of the Patriots to defeat Hawes and Pat Hayes of Cave Spring 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 in the doubles championship. Team competition will begin this morning at the River's Edge sports complex.
