ARMSTRONG, JOHN E.\
John E. Armstrong, 1155 Welch Road, S.W., Roanoke, Va., died in a local
hospital Monday, May 7, 1990. Mr. Armstrong was born in Cabin Creek, W. Va.
and attended public schools in West Virginia and Ohio. He was a graduate of
Charleston University where he received a Bachelor of Science degree in
business administration. He completed graduate work at Indiana University,
Bloomington, Ind. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy in the
Pacific area. Mr. Armstrong commenced his career in the investment department
of Shenandoah Life Insurance Company. After a few years in the insurance
business, he joined the American Oil Company as assistant credit manager.
Shortly after the petroleum company moved its offices to Richmond, Va., Mr.
Armstrong returned to Roanoke and accepted a position as Corporate Secretary
of Southwest Virginia Savings & Loan Association where he progressed through
the ranks to the position of President. He served in that capacity for several
years, and, after over 25 years in the S & L industry, he retired. He later
entered the field of public relations with American Mortgage Company of
Raleigh, North Carolina, calling on banks and savings and loan institutions
throughout the state of Virginia. When this firm entered into a merger with
another company, Mr. Armstrong became an independent accountant, doing audits,
appraisals, and inspections for various insurance companies in several states.
He retired permanently in June 1986 because of health reasons. Mr. Armstrong
was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church where he had served on the Finance
Committee and Church Council. He was a member of Hidden Valley Country Club,
and a former member of Roanoke Rotary Club, Roanoke Round Table, Roanoke
Chamber of Commerce, Roanoke Realtors Association, the local Home Builders
Association, and Roanoke Creditmen's Association. While in the savings and
loan business he was a member of the United States and Virginia Savings and
Loan Leagues. He served on various committees with these leagues and was Vice
Chairman of the Virginia League in 1976. Mr. Armstrong is survived by his
wife, Dorothy Y. Armstrong; a daughter and son-in-law, Anna and Reginald Dyer;
two grandchildren, Sarah Nicholle Dyer and Edward (Teddy) Isaac Dyer; his
mother, Catherine M. Armstrong; an aunt, Mary A. Murray, all of Roanoke, Va.;
a brother and sister-in-law, James and Lois Armstrong, Cabin Creek, W.Va.; a
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Jeter and Geneva Doss, Roanoke, Va. He is
also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins. There will be a prayer
service at Oakey's South Chapel at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday conducted by Dr. George
K. Bower. Funeral services will be conducted from St. Mark's Lutheran Church
at 1:00 p.m. Thursday with Dr. Charles W. Easley officiating. Interment will
be in Sherwood Memorial Park. The family suggests memorial contributions be
made to the American Lung Association of Virginia, 6318 Peters Creek Road,
N.W., Suite A7, Roanoke, Va., 24016, or to St. Mark's Lutheran Church. The
family will receive friends at Oakey's South Chapel from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Tuesday and Wednesday.
