DEMOCRATS CONSIDER CHALLENGING WARNER

Virginia Democratic leaders will consider nominating a challenger to Republican U.S. Sen. John W. Warner if a candidate shows an interest by June 9, according to state party Chairman Paul Goldman.

Warner gained the seat in 1978 and was re-elected in 1984. He has a large campaign war chest.

Former 10th District Rep. Joseph L. Fisher has said he is considering a bid. But Goldman told the Democratic State Central Committee Saturday he has not heard from Fisher, 76. Fisher did not attend the committee meeting.
