GOODYEAR: SCHOOLS FAIL IN JOB-SKILL PREPARATION

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. plant managers are reporting dissatisfaction with the reading, writing and math skills of applicants who have graduated from high school, the company reported Tuesday.

Company spokesman Hank Ruppel said plant managers surveyed at 27 sites also have cited deficiencies in knowledge of the sciences and in communication skills among the applicants.

"Many graduates are unable to accurately complete employment applications," said Edward B. Steffy, manager of the company's Danville, Va., tire plant. "They frequently are unable to pass even the basics of the Virginia Employment Commission pre-employment test." - Associated Press
