Paul Williams of the Red Sox (10-15) hit his first two home runs of the year. His second, a three-run shot in the fifth off Brent Honeywell (1-0), gave Lynchburg a 7-4 lead.
Salem (11-16) broke open the game with a five-run sixth inning as 10 batters came to the plate. Armando Romero walked and took second on a wild pitch. Chris Estep singled and Romero scored when Lynchburg's Mickey Rivers mishandled the ball in the outfield. Rivers made another error on the throw, allowing Estep to reach third.
Tim Stange came on in relief for the Red Sox and walked Ben Shelton. Darwin Pennye then doubled off the wall to score Estep. Mike Huyler drove home the tying run with a groundout and Robb Bailey knocked in Pennye with a single to make it 8-7. Bruce Schreiber singled home another run to make it 9-7.
The Bucs added two runs in the eighth, and Estep hit his league-leading eighth homer leading off the ninth.
Salem batters struck out at least 10 times for the fifth straight game.
Salem's Tim Wakefield (2-1) will face Ken Ryan (1-3) today at 7:05 p.m. in the series finale.
