Kathleen Holt, who represents the Rocky Mount District on the board, will be unopposed in the selection. Holt, director of corporate relations for Ferrum College, was nominated by Ferrum alumni coordinator Ben Hodges.
In the Blackwater District, three candidates will vie for the board spot.
Thomas Rickard, Ferrum director of public relations, announced his candidacy Tuesday. Rickard, an Ohio native, told the three-member selection committee that his experience as a journalist has given him an understanding of local school issues.
Shirley Bowman Jamison, a Boones Mill lawyer, and Sarah McDaniel, a former administrative assistant for the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce, will challenge Rickard for the Blackwater seat that is being vacated by Linda Barnhart.
Barnhart has served two terms on the board and will not seek re-election, according to Carol Hagy of the selection commission.
Ben Divers and Jack Garst along with Hagy will make the two selections later this month. According to Hagy, being a registered voter within the district is the only requirement for serving on the board.
She added that the commission will attempt to balance the board by appointing people with diverse backgrounds.
