SOME SOUND ADVICE FOR ELECTRONICS BUYERS

THURSDAY EXTRA, quickline, PAGE 3

Q: I have a friend who purchased two speakers from a guy who was selling them out of the trunk of his car. He was told they were surplus items, which could be bought for hundreds less than if purchased from a store. My friend paid several hundred dollars for the speakers, only to find them for a lot less at a local store. Is this something that happens often? - T.W., Roanoke

A: A word of advice: If it sounds to good to be true, it usually is!

However, tell your friend not to feel too bad. Similar speaker scams are operating out of car trunks nationwide, according to the Consumer Electronics Group of Washington, D.C.

Salespeople operating from unmarked vehicles parked in lots, malls or on the streets entice unsuspecting consumers to purchase speakers with fraudulent bills of lading and invoices indicating that the manufacturers' suggested retail price is anywhere from $800 to $1,000.

Consumers are urged to make an offer, which could be anywhere from around $250 to $800. When attached to an audio system, it is readily apparent that the speakers are of cheap quality and cost no more than $25 to $50. By the time the speakers are connected, the salesperson is long gone.

Although it's too late for your friend, others may benefit from the following tips for consumers purchasing consumer electronic products:

Always buy from an established retailer with a permanent location.

Have the product you wish to purchase operated on the premises so that you can hear the sound and/or see the picture.

Read the warranty. Be sure the manufacturer's name, street address and city is prominently displayed on the warranty.

Ask about the store's return policy.

Ask what you should do in the event service is required.

Always get a receipt with the model and serial number and date of sale. Be sure it has the retailer's name and address on it.
