FLIGHT ATTENDANTS CLAIM JOBS UNSAFE

In a complaint to federal regulators, the nation's flight attendants say the skies they are flying are not so friendly - to workers' health, at least.

Poor air quality, cosmic radiation, jet engine noise and unwieldy food and beverage carts all pose health hazards, the union said in a petition to the Federal Aviation Administration Tuesday.

Matthew Finucane, director of air safety and health for the 30,000-member Association of Flight Attendants, said the FAA has failed to adopt standards as stringent as those set by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, which protects workers in most industries. Under federal law, aviation workers fall under the jurisdiction of FAA, not OSHA, regulations. - Newsday
