ALPO'S CAT FOOD TO BE DOLPHIN-SAFE

Taking a cue from Charlie the Tuna, ALPO Petfoods Inc. on Tuesday became the first major pet food manufacturer to ensure that its cat food is dolphin-safe.

Effective immediately, ALPO is promising customers that the 7 million pounds of tuna used annually for ALPO Tuna Cat Food will not be netted at the expense of dolphins.

"We're in the animal business, and animals are important to us whether they happen to be sea mammals or dogs and cats," said ALPO President and Chief Executive Officer Frank Krum.

The Pennsylvania pet-food company followed the cue of H.J. Heinz Co., owner of Star-Kist, which said April 12 it would stop buying tuna caught in nets that also trapped and killed dolphins. Van Camp Seafood Co., which markets Chicken of the Sea tuna, and Bumble Bee Seafoods Inc. quickly followed suit. - The Allentown Morning Call
