AUGUSTA SUPERVISORS SEEKING TORNADO AID

The Board of Supervisors in Augusta County voted unanimously Wednesday to seek state and federal aid to repair damage caused by tornadoes last week that killed two people.

The twisters Friday night caused nearly $790,000 in damage in the Augusta Springs and Swoope areas. One of the storms had winds of more than 157 mph, the National Weather Service reported.

More than a dozen houses, a church and many mobile homes were damaged by the tornadoes, along with barns, cars and other property.

Robert Louis Strickler, 27, was killed when a tornado hit a mobile home in Swoope, and Ronald Coleman Patterson, 38, was killed in a nearby camper.
