CURTIS STAYS AT RADFORD AS COACH

Charlene Curtis will be staying at Radford University.

Curtis was one of three finalists for the women's basketball vacancy at the University of Illinois, but the school opted to hire Ohio State assistant Kathy Lindsey. The Illini formally introduced Lindsey as their coach Wednesday.

"I'm a firm believer that everything works out for the best, and right now, Radford is the best place for me," said Curtis, who attended William Fleming High School.

Curtis was told she was one of three finalists for the job. Penn State coach Rene Portland reportedly was offered the position but turned it down.

"I was very interested in the job," said Curtis, who was among those granted an interview. "I think it could have been a great situation. The Chicago area is a great area for recruiting. The potential is there, with the Big Ten and everything, for Illinois to be a Top Ten program."
