BRUINS ELIMINATE CAPITALS IN FOUR

Came Neely scored twice as the Boston Bruins moved into the Stanley Cup final for the second time in three years with a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Wednesday night.

Boston took a 1-0 lead on John Carter's goal 53 seconds into the game and made it 2-0 on Neely's power-play goal late in the period. The Bruins then turned to goalie Andy Moog and a defense that held Washington to three goals in the final 202 minutes of the Wales Conference final series.

The Bruins, whose last postseason sweep came in 1979, will face the Campbell Conference champion, either Edmonton or Chicago, in the final. It will be the Bruins' 17th trip to the championship round. Their last appearance was in 1988, when they were swept by Edmonton.

The Capitals, making their first appearance in the Stanley Cup semifinals, were swept for the first time in 13 playoff series.

Neely scored the eventual game-winner early in the third period. His 12th playoff goal came on a brilliant pass from Brian Propp and made it 3-1 with 17:52 left.

Dale Hunter scored the Capitals' first third-period goal of the series with 9:33 remaining, but Moog thwarted Washington the rest of the way to improve his record to 12-3 in this year's playoffs. Thanks to a tenacious Boston defense, Moog faced 14 shots overall and only three in the third period.

For the fourth straight game, the Bruins got the first goal and forced the Capitals to come from behind.

The Bruins' victory was marred by an injury to Bob Beers. The left wing broke his right leg above the knee after colliding with Washington's Tim Bergland in the second period.

Following the victory, Boston was presented with the Prince of Wales Trophy, given to the Wales Conference playoff champion.
