BUCCANEERS FALL TO SOX IN 10 INNINGS

Paul Williams delivered a pinch-hit single in the 10th inning to lift the Lynchburg Red Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Salem Buccaneers on Wednesday night in Carolina League baseball.

The decisive hit came off Salem relief pitcher Tom Deller. Mike Pomeranz (2-3) surrendered two runs on two hits in the 10th inning and allowed the tying run to score on a wild pitch.

The Buccaneers had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning when Rob Bailey walked with two out, stole second and scored on a single by Greg Sims.

Salem starting pitcher Tim Wakefield went nine innings, scattering seven hits and striking out a season-high nine. He gave up a two-run homer to first baseman Les Wallin in the fourth inning that gave the Red Sox a 2-1 lead.

Salem designated hitter Tim Hines had three hits, including a run-scoring triple and a double.
