CLIFTON FORGE HOUSE FIRE DOUSED

An elderly man was taken to the hospital following a house fire in Clifton Forge Wednesday evening, Fire Chief Sidney Tyler said.

The fire, which was reported about 8 p.m., burned several rooms in a house on the 200 block of Roxbury Street.

About 15 firefighters and one pumper truck responded to the call.

The fire was in a residential section where the houses stand close together. The rear of the wood frame house was fully ablaze when firefighters arrived.

"It might have started on the porch," Tyler said.

The man, whose name and exact age were not available, was taken to Alleghany Regional Hospital in Low Moor for observation after getting overly excited when the flames lapped at the eaves of his house.

Firefighters had the blaze under control in about 15 minutes, but they were dousing it with water for more than an hour, Tyler said.
