REZONING IS DELAYED AT PRESTIGIOUS INN

Members of the Town Council on Wednesday delayed a decision on whether to grant a rezoning that would allow an expansion of the prestigious Inn at Little Washington.

Innkeepers Patrick O'Connell and Reinhardt Lynch want to expand the 10-room inn by adding 22 rooms and a pool.

The inn is called by New York Times Food Editor Craig Claiborne "one of the most exciting retreats in all of America." The Mobile Travel guide ranks it as the only 5-star inn in the country. And, the inn's guest list includes Paul Newman, who said the inn "is a most satisfying slice of comfort and royalty."

Lynch and O'Connell opened the inn 12 years ago in an abandoned garage. It is zoned residential and the innkeepers want it to be zoned for "mixed use."

After a public hearing on the issue, the council voted to take up the matter at a meeting May 23, O'Connell said. O'Connell said the major objection seemed to be rezoning along one of the adjacent streets, which is mostly residential. He said he expected a compromise to be worked out.
