SECOND HILLARY REACHES TOP OF MOUNT EVEREST

The son of the man who first climbed Mount Everest reached the peak of the world's highest mountain today, following an American team and members of a three-nation peace climb to the crowded summit.

Peter Hillary, 36, son of Edmund Hillary, reached the top of the 29,029-foot peak 37 years after his father and sherpa guide Tenzing Norgay pioneered the way. It was his fourth attempt.

Sir Edmund was created a knight of the British Empire for his exploit four decades ago. He has retained a long association with Nepal and has led aid projects there, building schools and hospitals to improve the lives of the Sherpa people.
